CANON & HISTORY: IDOLiSH7
Mitsuki's early life was as normal as you could ask for: two loving parents who ran a home business and, when he was four years old, blessed him with a little brother who immediately became one of the most important parts of Mitsuki's life. The Izumis run a bakery and that's the first place Mitsuki saw one of the other most important people in his life: an idol named Zero. He came into the bakery as a regular customer but when people recognized him, he put in an impromptu performance. Mitsuki saw the way it made everyone in the bakery happy and knew he'd found what he wanted to do in life.
Unfortunately, the cards were stacked against him. Mitsuki grew up but not far enough--he's short, babyfaced, somewhat clumsy as a dancer, and an average singer. As a result, while Mitsuki went on many auditions, he failed all of them. While he never stopped trying, he also had to stay realistic. He worked in his parents' shop while he was growing up and went to cooking school, obtaining a professional certification. He's good at what he does in the kitchen but while he enjoys it, it was never where his heart was.
Mitsuki's brother Iori was never particularly interested in fame or becoming an idol, but when he was seventeen years old he was scouted on a public bus by Otoharu Takanashi, the president of a small production company bearing his name. While his own ambitions didn't necessarily lie on the stage, he knew his brother's did. That's why Iori made a condition on his contract: if he came to Takanashi Productions, his brother also had to be offered a contract. And so it was that Mitsuki Izumi became a member of IDOLiSH7.
The group got off to a difficult start, having trouble gaining traction, facing internal conflicts, and even having one of their songs get stolen. Along the way, though, they did gain an audience, and became even closer and stronger together. Each of the members has been given opportunities to develop their own individual strengths along with the group, and Mitsuki has really grown as an MC. IDOLiSH7 has their own web series and he's often the moderator and master of ceremonies on that, helping to direct the flow of conversation. He also performs that role when the group are appearing on television together, and sometimes even at their concerts.
Because of the nature of the group and his own perception of his shortcomings, he's sometimes the target of fan gossip and derision. At first he tried to change himself in order to please them but one of the other members of his subunit, Nagi Rokuya, gently confronted him and reminded him that he was at his best self when he was authentic. Since then Mitsuki's become an even stronger member of the group, helping to support and guide the younger members when they need it.
AGE: 21
CANON POINT: After 3.2.4, specifically after his conversation with Shimooka-san about Chiba Salon
PERSONALITY: If Mitsuki were asked to describe himself, he would tell you first and foremost he is a Man. As a counter to his small stature, young-looking face, and somewhat feminine interest in baking and cooking, he's worked hard to develop a very masculine personal presence. He's more than willing to scold, bark orders, or even get physically rough or aggressive when he feels it's necessary. He's spent most of his life as a big brother and while Iori is a great kid, it gave Mitsuki the life experience he needed to be able to take on a leadership role within IDOLiSH7. One of his first acts within the group is to force one of the younger members, Nagi, to sit seiza and watch while Mitsuki gets rid of some of his anime paraphernalia because it's taking over the entire dorm. He does something similar later on with a member of another group who all of IDOLiSH7 see as senpais. Mitsuki's willingness to take charge when necessary knows no age limits.
There is a part of Mitsuki's overwhelming masculinity that masks deep insecurities, however. He's aware of the gap between himself and the rest of the group and it sometimes makes him insecure about his own abilities and worthiness to even be a part of it. He can overcorrect when criticized, and often won't defend himself from it. Part of that is simply good PR--there's nothing to be gained from fighting with fans or critics--but part of it is a belief that they're right. When he's at his most depressed about this, he talks about feeling like a burden to the group, like he can't pull his own perceived weight because he's not as talented as they are. The rest of the group are quick to reassure him, though, and as he's been with them longer he's gotten more confident in himself.
In general Mitsuki is a flexible and gregarious moodmaker, taking on many different roles in the various dramas the group puts on. He's been a home ec teacher, a police detective, Cinderella, and a firefighter, embracing roles that allow him to show off both his feminine appearance and his masculine presence. He greatly prefers the more masculine ones and hates being mistaken for a girl to the point that he's stated when he goes out drinking he's going to return home stripped to the waist, but when it comes to the work of his group, he's willing to put that aside in order to do what's best for them.
Speaking of when he goes out drinking, however. Mitsuki is a very social drinker but he does like his social drinking. He's not normally reticent by any means but when he starts to drink, he becomes a chatterbox and everyone's best friend. He and the other adults within their friend group do often go out for a few drinks together and Mitsuki's tendency to get talkative is well known, if not always well appreciated. It's just what he's like when you take his inhibitions away, it's not his fault!
POWERS: none, he's mundane
OTHER: Mitsuki is a fantastic cook and baker. Of course, the base camp won't have the supplies or facilities to support that, but if they reach worlds that do, be sure to look for him in the closest thing to a kitchen.
PRICE: The physical copy of his contract with Takanashi Productions for IDOLiSH7. It's a link to his brother and to the group who are all like family to him now, it's proof he's succeeded and that someone wanted him to do the thing he's always also wanted to do. He doesn't carry it with him but having it taken from home will still be pretty significant for him.
ACCLIMATION: 6. Mitsuki is very flexible and adaptable in canon, taking on different roles in the dramas the group puts on while also maintaining his own sense of self. As long as he has a way he can step up and people he can look after, he'll be fine for the most part. He'll be concerned about his brother and the rest of his group and his parents, the people he cares for back home, but he's not the type to aggressively fight against a situation so much as he is the type to make what he can of it.
